This is used to identify any required updates in the future. This information could be used against you, for example, if security fixes are available for a specific operating system (OS) version. Having the OS version number exposed to malicious individuals may expose the security status of your OS.

For example if in June 2012 your MAC OS version was 10.7.4 this would mean that you had installed the latest patches and fixes. But if you had a lower version numberit would mean that you had not yet installed the patches and fixes. This information may be used to compromise your computer because it is known that patches and fixes have not been installed.
