Gmail

Gmail is the e-mail service provided by Google free of charge. While Gmail makes it easy to access your mail and offers a reliable service without direct payment, you do pay them by disclosing information about yourself (the content of your emails) and about other people (everyone you send emails to and receive from). Running a mail service does involve costs, Google refinances this by using your personal information in ways you may not like, such as through selling or giving it to third parties. Google is known to routinely scan the content of all email sent through their service and is also one of the companies that have been revealed to co-operate with the NSA.
