In some cases you may need to register your operating system (OS). Microsoft Windows used to require registration in order to activate the operating system, but this is no longer the case as long as you have a valid purchased serial number. For Apple computers, OS registration is part of the hardware registration process.

Registering your OS may associate your personal or purchase details with the OS serial number. With an Apple computer, registration associates your hardware and operating system with the personal information (including email address, home address, and phone number) that you enter during the installation process. As a result, you may want to provide alternative information, during installation, so the automatic OS registration does not link to your actual identity.
